We're thrilled to be sponsoring two candidates as part of our District's team of five who are going to Sydney, Australia for a month in March 2012. This is a personal development opportunity for Emma Eyles, Aylesbury Town Centre Projects/Events Officer and Andrew Kay, Journalist with the Buckinghamshire Herald. They will spend time shadowing, visiting and learning from people and organisations who do similar media and events related work in Sydney. It's Rotary's way of supporting young leaders and promoting international understanding.

It looks like 2013 will be New Zealand... if you are between 25 and 40 years old and a full time working professional in the Aylesbury area and want to be considered for the next trip, then please send us a message.

Santa is making an extra visit to Aylesbury

Why Santa isn't getting to your street

We have posted information before about why Santa may not be on your street this year. As some of you are worried about this, here is some more information to help you understand what happens which may leave you feeling like you've been left out.

We are a small group of volunteers who collect funds which are put into a separate charitable trust where they are managed properly. We go out every night in December until the 23rd, and collect every Saturday and Sunday in December before Christmas, We provide, along with others who volunteer their time, around 700-800 hours to get the Float around Aylesbury and manned at the Hale Leys Shipping Centre. If you walked every night with us, you would walk around 100 miles.

It's a big deal - and we love doing it - for the children and for the local charities who benefit from the generosity of Aylesbury residents.

By public demand we publish a schedule according to the area we'll be in. We can't guarantee to be in any specific street, and we change the routes from year to year. Safety is very important to us and we try to respect other road users and also try to manage the balance between access to Santa and the safety of children who come out onto the streets to see him. At times, we also change the route minute by minute - for the reasons listed below:

We go out in all weathers. In 2010 we went out in all but the most severe of snow storms. In 2011 we are experiencing drenching downpours which leave even the best protected volunteer soaked through to their underwear. Sometimes we abandon a trip part way because the safety of the volunteers and the public may be endangered.
We try to get down as many streets as possible. The main problem we face is parked cars, especially on some of the narrow estate roads. We need to be considerate of other road users and at times we are unable to get down a road, and turn around safely. Heavily parked areas will also slow down our progress.We ask for your understanding of our need to be safe.
We love to see the children and do our best to allow them to experience Santa - whilst being safe. We do encounter groups of children, unsupervised, who try to climb on the Float. This slows our progress. We also encounter children running across roads, in their excitement, and again, we try to manage this as best we can.
We have to be off the streets by 8pm and we tend to start once the worst fo the traffic is over.
We rely on volunteers. Sometimes we are a bit short - sometimes we get let down at short notice - and this means we can't cover as much ground as we'd like, or at the speed we may like to.

It's a good job Santa's red velvet coat and hat can be tumble dried - he has got very wet in the last week! He's hoping the weather gets better in the next couple of weeks. Obviously he would like to visit as many places as he can, but he is also conscious of the need not to take too many risks in his travels. New Member - Judy Freeman

On 12th December we held our Christmas Dinner at the Five Arrows at Waddesdon. At this event, we inducted Mrs Judy Freeman into Rotary. Judy is a financial manager and works for the solicitors Horwood & James in Aylesbury. She's no stranger to the club - over the last 15 years she has attended many events and she has been an active supporter of our charitable, community and international service.

It's a real pleasure to gain a member so committed and experienced to helping others - while being able to have a great time doing so.

Which street and which time is Santa around Aylesbury?

We do get many queries from Aylesbury Residents who are keen to know exactly which street we will be on and at what time. We've learnt over the years that the best we can do is advertise which area we'll be in. There are a number of reasons why we can't guarantee a route. For example, we sometimes find that cars are parked in such a way that we can't ensure safe passage for the Carol Float. We can do more streets if we have many volunteers to help - and sometimes we are a bit short. And there are unplanned events such as heavy snow or electrical failures.

We'll do our best to stick to the timetable. Listen out for the music - then you'll know where we are!

Aylesbury Rotary donates to Thames Valley & Chiltern Air Ambulance

Past President Roger Simmons (2010/11) handed over a cheque to the Thames Valley & Chiltern Air Ambulance last month. Each year the President of the Club has a nominated charity and this was Roger's.

This money will go towards one of those charities we hope never to be personally acquainted with - yet is so vital when we really need it.

Wow - it's always gratifying to receive early interest in our Carol Float schedule. We're an Aylesbury Tradition. Did you know we now have some collectors who say their first experience of Christmas that they can remember is the Carol Float coming past their house?

We are busy organising the route schedules, which is never as simple as it sounds. As soon as they are known, they will be posted on this website on its own special page.In the meantime, for those of you who would like to help either with the "Round-the-housse" float or the Static display at Hale Leys, then please contact us.

Helping out is a great way to discover what we do as Rotarians, how we do it, and who benefits. It could be your first step to becoming a member so we welcome your contribution.

Max Tucker wins the Essay Competition

Who wants to be a policeman? Max Tucker does!

The Aylesbury Rotary Club runs an annual essay competitionentitled, “What I want to be when I grow up”. Hundreds of entries were assessedby Rotary Co-ordinator Keith Highfield and Max Tucker won the prize of spendinga day testing his ambitions. Chief Inspector Henry Parsons helped co-ordinate aday to remember which included spending time with PC Roger Jarvis and his dogOscar.

Presidential Citation for Aylesbury Rotary Club

The Club was awarded a Presidential Citation at the District's Annual Conference in Scarborough. Basically, this meant that during President Roger Simmons year, the club met or exceeded a number of targets including membership gain, fundraising and other Rotary specific initiatives and goals.

Essay competition won by a pupil from William Harding Combined School

Each year, the club runs an essay competition where pupils are invited to submit a short essay on the topic of "What I would like to be when I grow up". The prize is to have a go at doing just that.

Max Tucker wrote a compelling essay about wanting to be a Police Office or a Police Dog Handler. Rotarian Keith Highfield organised with the local Chief Inspector who has now provided Max with a half day experience into the mysteries of the police, including dog handling.

This is the inaugural year for the new trophy for this competition and the club would like to thank Rotarian Les Sheldon for donating the cup and Rotarian Keith Highfield, who has organised this competition for a number of years.

This competition would not be possible without the support of teachers and their schools and we would like to offer them our thanks and we look forward to their continuing support.

Opportunity to travel to Australia on a funded professional learning experience: GSE

Group Study Exchange (GSE) is one of Rotary's International programs. Four professionals from District 1260 which includes the Aylesbury Area, will be selected to travel, with a Rotary Team Leader, to Sydney, Australia from 3 - 31 March 2012. During this time the GSE team will visit local businesses, make presentation, stay with local families and be part of the Rotary experience. Travel and accommodation is covered.

The Aylesbury Rotary Club would love to put forward for the team one or more of our own local professionals. You need to be in full time employment and between the ages of 26 and 40. You also need to be available for the whole time period of 3 - 31 March. The theme for the exchange will be media and communications but if you are not directly associated with those industries (well, who doesn't include communication in their role?) then still please contact us. This isn't a holiday - it's a unique opportunity to share and learn with like-minded professionals.

Twinning Weekend with our German and French Clubs

We've had a glorious long weekend with the Eckernforde Club and Bourges Club with whom we are twinned. They visit us every four years. This year we hosted an arrival supper at the Red Lion in Wendover ad then on Friday a trip to Warwick Castle and then a meal in Rotarian homes. On Saturday, Rotarian Les Sheldon gave the guests a tour of Old Aylesbury, followed by lunch at Horwood and James offices in town. The gala evening was held at the Quainton Railway Centre.

This is always a reminder of the importance of developing relationmships with those who live in other countries and brings home the International perspective of Rotary.

(The costs for this event is born by the clubs involved and we raise funds in the intervening years from our own pockets, to support his activity. No charitable funds are used.)

Club Assembly and Handover: 27th June 2011

The Rotary "year" runs from 1st July to end June. This is when the handover from one team to another happens. Prior to this we hold a Club Assembly where the incoming President goes through the program for the year and the planned activities and projects.

We are holding our Assembly and Hanover on Monday 27th June at the Holiday Inn, Tring Road at 6:45 for 7pm. Partners are invited. This is a good time to find out what we're doing and plan to do so if you'd like to join us then please email us.

On Saturday 30th July, we'll be hosting a town rounders tournament. It will be at the Aylesbury Rugby Club. Teams are 8 - 12 in size so find some colleagues and join in. It costs only £20 per team. Rotary District 1260 Foundation Committee has funds available for an Ambassadorial Scholarship for the academic year 2012 - 2013. The Rotary Club of Aylesbury is in this district.

The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries and geographical areas. The program sponsors academic year scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to a greater understanding of their host country.

Nominations from Clubs should be made by July 1st 2011.

If you would like to apply for this scholarship, then please contact us as soon as possible.

The successful candidate will be:

Ready to study overseas
Be from our District
Have shown academic capability and a commitment to a particular vocation (usually a post-graduate)
Not be a Rotarian or a relative of a Rotarian

We have a rolling plan to make up and send to the co-ordinators a number of Aquaboxes each year. These boxes are essential for disaster zones as they provide for the basic survival of a family and double as water filters / carriers.

We recently sent two fully filled boxes and are working on completing another two.

Essay Competition

It's that time of year again. Schools in Aylesbury are about to receive an invitation for students to send in their essays. The topic of the essay is "What I want to do when I grow up" and the prize is ---- a day doing just that! In previous years, the winners have ended up at Buckingham Palace, in a theatre, at the A&E Department at the hospital and other really interesting places. There is an age limit on this - if you want to join in then please ask your teacher or school.

Santa is now preparing for his big night and before he left Aylesbury he asked us to make sure we thanked everyone who so kindly gave money. The Carol Float is a big tradition in Aylesbury and we are thrilled to be able to keep it going. We can only do so with the help of many people.

Most of the money raised will be distributed to local charities by the end of January. We''ll list the recipients on this website so do check back here early February.

Maika Villarico gets our Rotary Young Leader Award

Maika works in the immigration department of Pickup & Scott's in Aylesbury and is looking forward to using the RYLA weekend run by RAF Henlow to develop her team working and communication skills. She'll be spending time along with other young professionals, will be challenged by the variety of activity - and will have a great time!

We are looking forward to Maika telling us all about it when she gets back.

A previous RYLA candidate, Kevin Brook enjoyed it so much he has returned in following years to help out. Kevin is now an owner of the local print company, Fresh.

Are you applying to us for funding?

We receive many applications for donations and funding, of which we are able to support only a few. Here are some thoughts and ideas for you to consider when sending in an application.

Do you qualify for the James Cox Fellowship (please see the website for details)? General requests sent to us that do qualify may end up not being considered because the application is not correctly targeted.
Does your covering letter state your local connection? We may feel more connected to local needs, though we do, in exception cases, consider international needs.
Is your request unique? If it is part of a national campaign then we may not be the best place to start your search for funding.
Is your request linked to charitable and humanitarian needs? If so, then it's worth making this clear. We tend not to fund gap years and trips like like that.
What do you know about Rotary? If your letter helps us connect your needs with our values and principles then it makes your case stronger. If you are local, then have you ever been involved in any of our activities?

From the 1st to 3rd July 2011 a group of selected individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 will learn about themselves, teamwork and citizenship during a very active and fun programme based at RAF Henlow.

If you are in the right age group and live or work within the Aylesbury Vale area, then we would like to hear from you. We are able to sponsor you for this unique opportunity. Aquabox: our continuous program

Every time there is a natural disaster, Aquaboxes get sent out to help provide humanitarian aid as well as water facilities. The box is a clever design. We fill them with the basics needed for survival, from string, to pots and pans, rope, soap etc. When the box is emptied it can be used as a water carrier and filtration unit.

We are always looking for donations of items to go in the box or for donation of cash to purchase the contents. If you are interested in helping us or in filling a box at your school, church, mosque, business or club, then please get in touch with us.

We will also be outside Hale Leys on the Saturdays and Sundays in December prior to Christmas.

The current membership contact is Dr Sarah Fraser and she will contact you and arrange a call or meeting.

We welcome any prospective members to any of our regular meetings at the Holiday Inn, Tring Road on Mondays (usually 12:30 for 12:45 but check as sometimes we have early evening meetings). Prospective members are also welcome to our social events and our fundraising activities.

Rotarian Miss Sehval Ozturk Visits from Turkey, Bodrum Rotary

On the 25th October, Miss Sehval Ozturk joined us for our meeting. She explained one of the projects they have been working on in Turkey to give lighting to a local castle so it can be used for tourism. Their club also works on projects for the disabled in their community.

We all enjoyed the box of Turkish Delight she brought with her!

Carol Fest Aylesbury Town Centre 16 December

The Carol Fest is a big event in Aylesbury, with music and singing. We collect donations during the Concert and are always looking for both Rotarians and others to help us. If you'd like to help on the night then please email us.
